Do you want to keep your teeth looking as if they were freshly whitened?
Getting your teeth whitened is great, but the real challenge is to make sure they maintain the newly whitened shade. The aftercare for teeth whitening is very important as it is guaranteed that teeth will change colour over time, even after whitening. However, this can easily be slowed by a few lifestyle changes.
Here are 3 things to do after using our ZSmile range:
1 - Avoid staining food and beverages
After whitening your teeth, it is recommended for you to avoid any foods and drinks that can potentially stain the new shade.
Beverages such as coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, red wine and fruit juices can all stain the teeth due to their strong colour. A drink with less vibrant colour is less likely to discolour the white shade. However, if you really cannot avoid these beverages, using a straw can help as the liquid is less likely to touch the surface of the teeth.
Similarly, in terms of food, strongly pigmented foods like berries, dark coloured sauces, red meats, dark chocolate and artificially coloured sweets, are best to avoid or eaten sparingly as they can stain your teeth when chewed. Unlike drinks and using a straw, it is harder to avoid staining with foods.
A great tip to know if a food or beverage may stain your bright smile is to judge whether or not a white shirt can be stained. If so, it is very likely to also stain your teeth!
2 - Regular Brushing
Brushing and flossing regularly after whitening your teeth, or even more than you usually do, can keep your smile looking its best long-term. Brushing ensures that any fresh stains on the teeth are removed in good time to avoid discolouration. To take it a step further, if you start brushing immediately after eating or drinking a staining food or beverage, this can stop any stains from building up on your teeth
throughout the day.
However, just after whitening, your teeth become more porous and increase insensitivity. Whilst brushing the stains away, make sure to avoid whitening toothpaste for a week or so as they are more abrasive and can potentially make your teeth even more sensitive!
3 - Avoid Tobacco products
It is strongly recommended for you to avoid using tobacco products after teeth whitening. Tobacco is not only harmful to your oral health but is also very staining for your teeth. The nicotine and tar in tobacco are able
to seep into the pores of your teeth, which have been freshly whitened, staining them a yellow or brown colour. Tobacco can also irritate the tissue of your gums, making your gums loosen around your teeth. This makes it easy for bacteria to settle in and cause tooth decay.
